Dear Maria, How time flies and I never got back to you to thank you for the information. I will ask questions if I have trouble with the translation. I am not bilingual. I am not related to Alonzo Betancourt but he is a person of interest to be because he was a fellow parishoner and neighbour of my ggg grandmother. Two days ago, I was able to finally get a copy of Alonso Betancourt's will. I was written 10 December 1851. It begins: In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost Amen. I, Alonso Betancourt a native of the City of Puerto Principe Island of Cuba and a citizen of the United States of America and a resident of the City of Philadelphia in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania... . He directs that he be buried at St. Augustine's {4th and Arch} but was buried at St. Joachim {now Griscom and Church st. - then was Franklin and Pine St. respectively}. He names his wife, Jane McCormick Betancourt, sole executrix. He names his daughters America Josefa and Isabel. He also mentions that "my dear Brother Gaspar A. Betancourt Colonel of the Militia of the City of Puerto Principe in the Island of Cuba" is to oversee the sales of Alonso's properties in Puerto Principe and Nuevitas. If Gaspar is unable to perform the duties then he appoints his brother in law Don Benjamin Sanchez of Puerto Principe. It mentions his father Frances (sic) Betancourt. There is also mentioned a "brown man" named Jose Marie who was to get $50.00 annually until his death and that this is being carried on from a bequest by Alonso's father to Don Jose Marie. I will try sometime to transcribe the will to this site. Again, thank you for your information. Sara Notify Administrator about this message?
