In 1638, the Plymouth court received notice that one Anthony Besse (a/k/a Bessey) of Sandwich was "disorderly keeping house alone". From this, I infer that he was still single at that time, but various bits of circumstantial evidence indicate that he married soon thereafter, to a woman named Jane, had several children, and then died in 1657 in Sandwich, leaving Jane a widow (and she remarried, to one George Barlow (a/k/a Barlowe)). Also living in Sandwich in 1639 was Henry Feake, with his wife and children. One of their daughters was a Jane Feake. The baptismal records of St. Margaret's, Westminster, near London,England include a Jane Feake, christened on May 4, 1621, daughter of Henry Feake. I believe most people are of the opinion that this is the Henry Feake who migrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was at Saugus (near Lynn, MA) when he and others were granted land by the Plymouth Colony and settled what would become Sandwich, MA, on Cape Cod. Henry Feake apparently left Sandwich sometime before 1656 (but probably after 1651) and moved to Long Island, New York. His first wife died and he remarried, to a widow named Joanna Wheeler (who had children of her own). Henry died sometime between September 1657 and April 1658. Apparently some litigation and/or probate records from Long Island (possibly in the Dutch records?) indicate that Henry Feake had three living children at that time (but perhaps does not identify them by name). Many Feake researchers believe that one of these three (adult) children of the late Henry Feake was Elizabeth Feake, who had married John Dillingham in Sandwich in 1651. Is it possible that another of the three adult children was Jane (Feake) (Bessey) Barlowe of Sandwich? I have had no success finding any marriage record for either Jane Feake or Anthony Bessey, but they were living in the same place (Sandwich), where there were only about 60 families, and Jane was the right age to marry about 1639. Does anyone have any information about Jane Feake? Did she survive childhood and marry? If you have info, please share by posting here. Notify Administrator about this message?
