A biography/family history of Hypolite Bessette, freighter, rancher and stockman, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3.

Hypolite was born in Louvre, France, in 1851. In 1878 he immigrated to Eastern Canada and the same year he and his six brothers traveled by stage to Helena, MT, and on to Fort Benton, MT, where they puchased ox teams and went into the freighting and transportation business for five or six years. During the winter months, the brothers lived in a log cabin on the banks of the Marias River. This cabin and surrounding land became the ranch of Hypolite. In 1897, he brought his family to Montana. He was in the stock raising business until his death on 23 Dec 1901.

Hypolite married Miss Marie Lea Carreau. Children: Adelia; Corona, Eglantine; Valmord; Ademord. Adelia married a Mr. Green and died 3 Dec 1910, leaving one daughter, Corrine. Carona (Mrs. Sprinkle) died 1 May 1917, leaving three sons: Roger, David, and Robert Sprinkle. Eglantine (Mrs.C.C. Roper)became a land attorney at Havre, MT, and had two children: Idale and Robert.
