I have always heard from my family it is a French name. My relatives, on the Beshear side, hail from Missouri, but I have been unable to track them to Mo. through birth certifictes, etc. I think at one time there was an "s" on the end but it was dropped by my grandfather because he his elementary teacher told him he was not "plural"
