Gilbert BERWICK, b. 1835, LA, d. TX

My paternal gggrandmother, Rachel (BERWICK)HARMON, died two weeks after contracting measels on 27 May 1903. She was only 45 and she left 8 children. Her parents were Gilbert BERWICK and Elizabeth BURRELL. Gilbert stated on his application for a Mexican War pension that he was born in St. Landry Parish, LA, on 13 April 1834. His family has been a source of confusion for some time, but I have recently developed the theory that he may be one of the sons of Thomas BERWICK and Josephine LeJEUNE. This family is in Louisiana at least two generations prior, and then suddenly leaves LA between 1830-40. In 1850 a number of BERWCIKS appear in East Texas, and I believe they are the same family: Thomas, Sr., Thomas, Jr., William, Gilbert, and Joseph.

When I checked Rev. Hebert's books in Vol. 2B, p 76, I found a son of Thomas and Josephine named "Hubert" b. 13 Apr 1835. However, the IGI has translated this name into "Gilbert". Without looking at the document Reb. Hebert saw, I can certainly see how handwriting could be interpreted into either name.

The dates match, the family group matches...so my question is, can anyone else confirm that Thomas and Josephine (LeJEUNE) BERWICK had a son named Gilbert, and can anyone confirm that this is the same family who immigrated to east Texas before 1840?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you are able to give!
