Stephen Berwick here! To lessen the confusion, my middle name is Wayne - Stephen Wayne Berwick. Great to see another Stephen Berwick!
Thanks for the information. I'd more or less come to that conclusion, as well. So far as I can find, the Berwicks that I am related to came to Canada from Edinborough. Records show a number of Berwicks were British soldiers in the American Revolution (Loyalists) who later moved to Canada and were there given land. Some Berwicks also came over from Ireland and settled in Canada. They had been, some of them, landlords (one, Margaret Berwick, owned over 670 acres in County Cork during the mid 1800s, another Berwick owned 6 acres there). I've finally made a breakthrough in my own case and found that my great-great-great grandfather was more than likely William Berwick (brother to Henry and Willard Berwick) out of Sherbrooke, Quebec. Due to missing records, and a town fire, my great-great grandfather's name is still up in the air. However, a family member who knew my great-great-grandmother and some of the other names I had, helped to establish the great X 3 connection.
There is a Berwick family crest that I finally found. It is three bear heads with muzzles against a grey background. The question I have is whether this was from Margaret de Berwick (1300s) or James Fitzjames, Duke of Berwick. It is rather strange. I found also a lot of Berwick surnames are all over Continental Europe, no doubt descendants of James Fitzjames.
BTW, I also live in Hampshire - New Hampshire, in New England, not far from Portsmouth. Small world.
Good to hear from you, Steve.
