Michael,

I am John Thomas Bertrand -- one of the Texas-born Bertrands -- son of John Raney Bertrand (1915-2002), son of Bell Otis Bertrand, son of John Raney Bertrand, son of Pierre (Peter) Gabriel Bertrand, son of Pierre Rene Bertrand of San Domingue. I'm assuming from your note that you are also descended from my great-grandfather John Raney Bertrand who is buried in Smith Cemetery near Purmela TX.

Though we've searched diligently, we've never found a connection between those Bertrands of San Domingue (now Haiti) and the formerly French Huguenot clergyman Reverend Jean Bertrand who arrived a century earlier to become the rector of historic Christ Church on the Carter Plantation along the Rappahannock River of Virginia. I have done a lot of original research in Virginia about those Bertrands who married into the Ewell and Weems families of Virginia and whose blood entered your bloodstream and mine through John Raney Bertrand's wife, Mary Frances Slade Cayce Bertrand. Feel free to contact me. I live in the mountains of North Carolina. Tom Bertrand
