I am an 8th generation descendant of Jean and Marie Bertrand, married 1697. My great-great-grandfather, Leon Nazaire Bertrand, was four generations after Jean and Marie, and came to Aurora, Illinois, USA in 1853, about the same time several of his brothers also went to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan from the Montreal area. He married Virginia Provost in Aurora in 1854, and died and is buried there in a small cemetery of several French-Canadian emigrants or their descendants. I discovered this forum through the web page of our (distant) cousin, Normand Bertrand, whom I thank for his efforts to document the many branches of the Bertrand family. There are a few hundreds of descendants in this branch of the family in northern Illinois. My great-aunt, Madeline Bertrand Griggs, recorded a detailed tree of this part of the family.
