My great-great grandfather on my grandmother's side was named Frances (Frank) Bartholf. Family hearsay reports his first name was John, but all records show him as Frank or Frances. He married Elena Lydia Armstrong (b. 1834, d. 1880) and lived in or near Bordentown,NJ, before he and his wife moved to Upland, PA. He died on March 14, 1884. She died on April 21, 1880. They are buried in a cemetery across from Chester-Crozer Medical Center in Upland, PA. They had quite a few children, one of which was Lillian (Lilliana) Bartholf, my great grandmother who married Patrick Welsh.I found one deed that refers to James as Frances' father. I believe this is James (Johannes) Bartholf (b. April 12, 1788 in Totowa,NJ; d. Oct. 22, 1854 in Yawpough,NJ). He wasarried to Susan Randal (Randall) (b. approx. 1795) on Jan. 2,1812. James(Johannes) Bartholf's parents were Curine (Crynes) Bartholf (b. April 7, 1745 in Pompton Plains,NJ) and Susannah Van Alen (Allen?). Curines parents were Johannes Bertholf and Wyberig (Wybregh?) Laroe, who can be found in the World Family Tree. I have traced the Bertholf's back to the 14th century. Please note I have not found one document that indicates that Francis Bartholf had a first name of John and was the son of John Bartholf (b.1792) and Sinai (Siny, Leni)DeGroot (1793) who lived in Guttenberg,NJ. They did have a son named John, but this man is not John Frances, despite some family hearsay that has reported this.
