The Rev. G. Bertholf had three sons. Most of the Bertholfs can trace their ancestors back to one of those sons. Some Bertholf desendants, like me, can trace their ancestors back to the two eldest sons. Back in the 18th C it was common for cousins to marry cousins. When you research the family, you will find 1st, 2nd and 3rd cousins' marriages. Also, many Bertholfs married into other old Dutch and French Huguenot families, at this time. You find names like Ackerman, Hopper, Demarest, Terhune, Post, and so on. Another interesting bit of information is that some of the Bertholfs are distant cousins of the Roosevelt and Edison families, so you may be a distant cousin to Thomas Edison and both Pres. Roosevelts.
