Hello, I am trying to find information about Francesco BERTA, born in Sardinia. I have not been able to learn in which region of Sardinia he was born, and have not determined when he arrived in America. Francesco is enumerated twice on the 1860 census for New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a druggist, married to Althea/Althee (maiden name HEWLETT); a son, Ernest, is 8 years old on one census, and John HEWLETT (Althea's father) and a servant, Eliza Toole, are included in the household. On the other 1860 census enumeration he is a druggist, wife is Althea/Althee, son Ernest is 9 years old and there is a Felix Gandolfi also in the household. Francesco is listed as having been born in Sardinia on every record that I have been able to find so far that place of birth is part of the record. He is not counted on the 1870 census, and seems to have disappeared from New Orleans after 1865 when he was listed on the U.S. IRS Tax Assessemnt Lists, 1862 to 1918. On this record, 8 May 1865, he is listed as an apothecary. I have no further information and don't know how I can find anymore without knowing where in Sardinia he was born. Does anyone know of this BERTA family? Please contact me if you may know them. Thank you. Roslyn T. Albert-Sandronsky Sacramento, California Notify Administrator about this message?
