Samuel Berryhill (1798-1867) is said to be the son of John & Martha Berryhill of Jasper Co., GA. Samuel came to Bellefontaine, Choctaw Co., MS in 1834. He married Margaret Portman (1795-1873) the daughter of a Revolutionary Soldier JOhn Portman (1758-1857) and his wife Mary Cobb. The Portmans came from SC then moved to KY > TN > AL. Samuel & Margaret (Portmand) Berryhill had issue: George, Jeff, Martha Marcella, Sally Ann, William Harvey, John Wesley, Samuel Newton, and Margaret Euphrasia. This information on the Berryhills was obtained from the Webster/Choctaw Heritage book and was provided by Mary M. Kimbrell. I am helping a friend search for his Black/Indian ancestors and I am trying to identify a woman named Dorcus Berryhill who in 1870 was living with Andrew Hightower in the Bellfontaine area. She was probably enslaved by the Berryhill family and any information on her would be a great help. Thanks.
