Not all Scots are/were highlanders. Most CLANs are highlanders, not Lowlanders. Many families/surnames in Scotland were not organic to any CLAN.However, either by marriage or location, various families became allied with clans. One wing of BERRYHILLs could have become allied with Forbes, a second with Spence, and a third (and fourth and fifth, etc.) could have remained unallied.
My ancestors include CRAIGs (a non-Clan surname found all over Scotland), who considered themselves allied with both BUCHANAN and ARMSTRONG.......I have never found any reasons why.
