Unfortunately, I don't think that the John Berry about whom you are researching is our family's ancestor!I know that there were at least two Jesse Berrys in the early days of Kentucky. The reason that I know that "Our" John and Jesse Berry are not the same people as the subjects of your research is that our ancestors definitely moved to Macoupin County, Illinois about 1830 or 1831.Our ancestor, Jesse, was married to Mary Collins in August, 1826 in Muhlenburg Co., KY. I am trying to find more information about Mary Collins' family there.
There were several people named John Berry both in certain Virginia counties and in Kentucky early on.This phenomenon has resulted in abundant confusion for researchers.
We think that probably our John Maxwell Berry was born in Augusta Co., Virginia (the parent county of Rockingham)about 1766.We believe that he was married in the early 1790's to his first wife, whose name so far is unknown to us, at least. Then, about 1800, he move with this wife and two children to Bourbon or Harrison Co., KY.About 1801, his first wife died, and he was awarded the guardianship of the two children, Reuben and Rebecca Berry. There is a marriage record in Bourbon Co. on June 17, 1802 for John Berry and Margaret Claypoole. This couple had eight children, including Newton and Jesse Berry, born in 1803 and 1804, respectively. The other children were Rachel, David, Eleanor, Elizabeth, Pollina and Catherine.
The family moved to Muhlenburg Co., KY maybe around 1810 or 1815 (not sure of this date), and there are later records there for Jesse and Newton. The source of much of what we know about this family is the Bible records of the Rev. David Berry, brother of these Jesse and Newton.David stayed in Muhlenburg Co., KY after Jesse, Newton and their father, John, moved up to Illinois about 1830 and remained there. The Ilinois Census records and other family information later confirm this. John M. Berry died July 20, 1845, and his wife, Margaret, died in 1863.
Even though the John Berry family you are researching isn't ours, it still is very helpful for me and others to have the information about yours, because of so much confusion. These two family still could be linked earlier, back in Virginia.
To that end and possibility, please write to me at [email protected] am still trying to sort out these families in VA, and we could share the information we do have. Also two other researchers, Carol Vass and Laverne Raisch, have been working on the Virginia connections in Augusta and Rockingham Co., VA.
So, PLEASE WRITE!
