John W. Berry served in Co. H, 13th GA. Inf. Regt., Terrell County, GA. during the War Between the States. He was furloughed from Lynchburg, VA. Feb. 1, 1865 just bofoe the end of the war in April 1865. He died April 25, 1890 and, according to the short obit in The Dawson News, he was about 50 years of age, but he was more like 60 years of age if the census records were correct. His age was given as 39 and his wife's name was Lucinda, age 30 and they had a son, Edgar, 11, in 1870 and a daughter, Florence 5 mos. In 1880, they were listed as John, 47, born in S. C.; Lucinda, 44, born in GA. and their children were Florence, 10; Sarah, 9; Arra ( dau.), 3 and a son, Homer, 1. John married Virginia A. McVey in Terrell Co., GA. 7 Mar 1883, so this was his second wife. In the obit, he was said to be survived by a wife, 3 daus. and 2 sons. The older son, Edgar, was old enough by 1880 to be out on his own and there probably weren't any children from the 2nd marriage. Anyone having additional information on this family is asked to contact me before April 27, 2002 for more info concerning a dedication ceremony to be held that date.
