Dear Bill:
I have been involved for about three years in researching an extended BERRY family which can first be documented in Augusta Co, VA in the mid 1740a. I would like to share the information we have found with you on two Francis Berry’s since I think you have the information for both of them joined into one man.

#1 Francis Berry was born circa 1744-1755 and was the son of Francis Berry [Sr] and Isabell Unknown. Francis Sr died 1800 in Washington Co, VA and left a will naming his son Francis [Jr] This Francis [#1] married Sarah ‘Sally’ Sharp [1754-1834] circa 1775 most probably in Washington county Virginia since that is where her SHARP family had settled after PA. By 1780 Francis and Sarah were in Kentucky and were part of the event at Ruddles Fort/Martin’s Station which lead to their capture and imprisonment in Canada. Upon their return two years later, they stayed for quite a while in VA, but the family ultimatly settled in Whitley Co, KY. This Francis Berry left his wife and 12 children at some point and his death date is not documented, but occured sometime after 1800, possibly 1816. Sarah Sharp Berry died in 1834 in Whitely Co, KY and left a will naming her children. Children of #1 Francis Berry/Sarah Sharp* were:

John Wesley Berry (1776-1860), b. VA; d. KY; m. Nancy Agnes CLARK
Isabelle Berry (1778-1858) b. Martins’ Station KY; d. TN?; m. James KING
Lewis Berry (1781-1812) b. Montreal, Canada; d. ~1812
Benjamin Berry(1785-) b. KY?; d. ?
Elizabeth Berry(1786-1865) b. VA; d. KY; m. Thomas SHARP
Sarah Sharp Berry (1788-1874) b. VA; d. MO; m. Wm. DRYDEN, m. 1805-Washington Co, VA
Marie Ann Berry (1789-)
Ann Berry (1790-)
Francis 'Frank' Berry (1791-1880) m. Pamela MAHAN
Lucinda Berry(1794-)
Dele LaFayette Berry (1796-) m. Polly PORTERFIELD
Louise Berry (1798-) m. Charles OWENS
There is conflicting information about whether there is a 13th child, Mary, b.

#2 Francis Berry was born approximately 1762 and was the son of Thomas Berry and Esther Unknown [possibly WARD]. Thomas Berry died 1799 in Washington Co, VA leaving a will which named his son Francis. This Francis [#2] married Nancy Berry 13 April 1802 in Washington Co, VA [Source D. E. Brown, “Marriages of Washington Co, VA” -- IMPORTANT NOTE: this marriage occurs in Washington Co, VA shortly before the marriage of a daughter of #1 Francis Berry, Sarah Berry married William Dryden in 1805 in Washington Co, VA] The first wife of Francis #2, Nancy Berry, was the daughter of John Berry/Jane Campbell so Francis #2 and Nancy were cousins.

It is somewhat unclear where Francis Berry #2 and Nancy Berry were for several years, but it is known that they had two children:
John Berry, b. 1803, WA Co, VA; d.1858, Cole Co, MO; m. Nancy Claybrook
Esther Berry, b. 1808, prob. VA; m. 1] Isaac House; 2] Dolphin Floyd; 3] John Clark

We have been unable to document either Nancy Berry’s death or Francis #2’s second marriage to Sarah Oliver [she was evidentally a widow, and we have been unable to find her original surname either]. There are four children attributed to #2 Francis Berry and Sarah ? Oliver**, however, it is fair to say that some people believe that the first two children may have been from his 1st marriage, but I list them here as all children of the second marriage since the records are unclear:
Nancy Berry, b. 1814 MO; d. before 1844, Texas
James Berry, b.1817 MO; d. aft 1852
Laurehama Berry, b. 1820; d. aft 1852 m ? Anson or Samuel Neill
Tillman Berry, b.1818, MO; d. 1866, TX; m. Caroline Galbreath

Sarah Oliver had two children from her first marriage:
John Oliver
Elizabeth Oliver, m. Benjamin Duncan

According to the information I have, Francis Berry #2 died 21 Nov 1852 in Lockhart, Caldwell Co, Texas and Sarah Oliver died 1856 in Caldwell Co, Texas.

I am not a descendant of either one of these BERRY men. My direct ancestor was Barbara Berry who married David Dryden Jr. Barbara Berry was an older half sister of Francis Berry #2. Her son, William Dryden married Sarah ‘Sally Sharp Berry, a daughter of Francis Berry #1. I would be very happy to share any and all information that I have on both of these men. They both had incredible life experiences in the early history of our country.

Warm regards,

Carol Vass
