Did Your Berry Family Say: "Hie-Come!"?
My Dad and his brothers had a peculiar expression they used.It was "Hie-Come!". It meant "Get a move on!!" Or "Hurry up!"I have never heard anyone else use this expression and I am thinking it may have come down the line from my English ancestors and might give a hint as to what part of England they were from.My Dad was raised in northeast Arkansas, but his dad YOUNG HENRY BERRY (1848-1925), was raised in Crockett County, TN. Young Henry's father was REDDICK HUNTER BERRY (born 1791-1804 in TN or NC).
I know that the word "hie" means "hurry", but Dad always put "hie" and "come" together as if one word, and said it with force, like a threat. Can someone tell me where this expression might have originated? Thanks.
