Constitutional lawyer, US Senator, and Attorney General under President Andrew Jackson. Collection consists of personal and legal correspondence of Berrien of Savannah, Georgia. Also included are papers of his father John Berrien (fl. 1750-1800), his son Lawrence Cecil Berrien (fl. 1880-1938), other members of the Berrien family, and the Falligant family who were related by marriage. The bulk of the correspondence, 1830-1855, deals with political topics such as the Eaton Affair, the Florida-Georgia boundary dispute, the Whig and American parties, and nullification and secession, and is addressed to men prominent in the Jackson Administration and in Georgia.
Correspondents includes George E Badger, George W. Crawford, Iverson L Harris, and George M. Troup. Also included are bills, receipts, legal papers, and some Civil War letters of the Falligant family; genealogical data on the Berrien and Falligant families; updated speeches; and assorted legal papers.
