ROSE BERNSTEIN b1880 Minsk, Russia
Our Grandmother, Rose Bernstein, was born 26 May 1880 in Minsk or Pinsk, Russia, and she died 2 Feb 1973 in Middletown, Delaware Co, Pennsylvania. She married our grandpa, Moische Slobodkin (Morris Bodkin), ca 1902 in Russia, probably in Minsk. The info on Rose's death certificate, given by our aunt Lillian, stated that her parents were Abr. and Freda Bernstein, and we assume that Abr. stood for Abraham, but it could be Abram. We have no further information about them at this time.
Rose arrived in New York 25 Sept 1905 aboard the S.S. Finland of the Red Star Lines, which sailed from Antwerp, Belgium on 16 Sept. 1905. She made the
journey with her brother-in-law, Jacob? Slobodkin, and two oldest children Raphael and Liebe, my uncle Phil and aunt Lillian, who were infants. Rose gave her name as
Rosa Slobodsky.
Grandma and Grandpa lived lived for a few years in Brooklyn, New York, where their third child, our uncle Bernard was born in 1906. By 1909, when their fourth child, our aunt Bella, was born, they had settled in Newport, Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinatti, Ohio.
We believe that some of Grandma's relatives lived in Cincinatti or nearby. She also had relatives, perhaps her brother Jacob, who lived in New Orleans, Louisiana and were in the fur business there. Some of her family may also have remained in New York or Brooklyn, and may have been in the fur business there as well.
