Hi... Thought I'd try posting again, as it's been about eight years since I've posted to this forum.I would like to talk to anyone researching the Bernier family in and around Houghton County, especially Portage Township. Alphonse was suppose to have been an Altar Boy, at the local Catholic Church, which I believe was St. Ignatius Loyola Church, in Houghton in the late 1880's and early 1890's. I wrote to them several years ago, but they had no record of him. I've been working on this for over 30 years, and still can not pin him down. If you are researching the Bernier line, please drop me a line.

Looking for information and parents of Alphonse BERNIER born in Portage Twp., Houghton, Mich. in 1880. He was born two months before the 1880 census but have not been able to find him. He is supposed to have 7 brothers and 1 sister. The only family that meets all this info is, Pierre BERNIER and wife Celanise TALON living in Portage Twp. in 1880, yet he is not listed as one of their children on the 1880 census. His Social Security Application, 1936, lists his father as Peter Bernier, and mother as Phyllis Healer, but the above Pierre (Peter) Bernier is the only Pierre Bernier I could find living in the area in this time peroid. His Birth Certificate lists his father as Peter Bernier, and mother as Phyllis Bernier, birthplace Portage Township, Houghton, Michigan.

He left home at the age of 14 or 16, and is listed in the 1896 Polk directory in Chassel as Alfonzo BERNIER, student, boarding with Onesime Pothier. He is also listed in 1903-04 directory as Alphonse BERNIER, laborer, Worcester Lumber Co. Ltd.. He and two of his brothers, Ed (Edward) and Fred (Fredrick) BERNIER moved to Detroit, MI. in 1905.

If anyone knows of this line, I would appreciate any help you might be able to provide.

Thanks........ Mike.. Contac me at: mike702@charter.net
