There is a well-known Bernier family in Puerto Rico.

A French family named Bernier settled in Puerto Rico c. 1800 (they came from one of the French Caribbean Islands). A granddaughter Eulalia Bernier married a Colombian (who had immigrated to PR c. 1850) Federico Matos.

They were the parents of Felix Matos-Bernier (poet) and Rafael Matos-Bernier (dramatist, newspaper publisher), both of whom were important literary figures in PR during the late 19th/early 20th century.
