Berner - Boerner ?

My grandfather and greatgrandfather's names were William Bartlett Boerner and John Adam Boerner. I have been unable to find or have a forum posted so far for this name. However, according to our family, the name was originally pronounced the way the "Berner" name is spelled or appears to be prounounced. We were told when they immigrated to the United States they changed the prounciation to
sound like Bow..er..ner. Has anyone every heard of any connection with the two names? I am trying to find ancestors or brother's or sister's descendents of John Adam Boerner born in Van Friet Germany in 1837. He married Marie Anna Sabillia Wiener and they immigrated to US between 1864 and 1872 ans settled in the Ashton, Illinois area. Would appreciate any information if anyone can find a connection.
