Louis Berner had a family of boys, having come from Germany a few years prior to the Civil War. He served in the 9th IL, so probably "earned" his citizenship. One son was Oliver Kirk, my husband's grandfather. Do you find a connection. This family was in Alton and O.K. died there in 1957.
