I have relatives living in Castle Bernard (in the gatehouse). I.ve wandered the castle grounds. I am not a Bernard. The castle was originally Castlemahon, the home of the O'Mahonys who burnt it down rather than turn it over to the British. Phane Beecher rebuilt it and later it became the home of the Brnard Family, Earls of Bandon from 1799.
In June 1920 the 4th Earl was kidnapped by the IRA and the castle was burned down. A smaller house was built and is occupied now.
The ruins and grounds are beautiful. Why don't you try a letter to the castle? It is probably still Bernard owned.
