Donald Byron Bernard, 78, died peacefully at home on Friday, August 1, 2008. Don was a charter member of Pellissippi United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir and became saved while on a Walk to Emmaus. He served in the Navy on a fighter squadron. Don was retired from the company he formed, Bernard Litho Repair, where he traveled the country installing and repairing printing presses. After retirement, he worked several years for the post office as a mail carrier. He loved athletics of all kinds. He golfed, played baseball, bowled, both water and snow skied, enjoyed swimming, camping and family vacations. He will always be remembered for his love of music and his sense of humor. A short story of Don's was published in a Knoxville Writers' Guild collection of memoirs in 1998. At the age of 75, he earned his GED. April 06, 1930, he was preceded in death by his brother Bill and sister Betty, as well as his parents and many friends and relations. His survivors include his wife Bobbye Bernard; son and daughter-in-law, Donald Jr. and Mardelle; son and daughter- in-law, Rick and Roxanne; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Catherine; son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Valerie; daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Jim Egner; seven grandchildren, Cory, Mariah, Abby, Quinn, Christina, Alexander and Lily; brothers, Chuck and wife Lou, Pat and wife Carol; sisters, Shirley and husband Al, Barbara, and Linda and husband Jack; brothers-in-law, Duane, Kenny, Larry, and Tim; sister-in-law, Teresa, and their families; many nephews, nieces, other relatives, and many wonderful friends will also miss him greatly. In lieu of flowers, Don asked that donations be made to the Salvation Army, 409 North Broadway, Knoxville, TN 37917. Pastor Ray Petty will officiate at a memorial service to be held for friends and family at Highland Memorial Funeral Home 5315 Kingston Pike, on Friday, August 8 at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m., August 7, 2008 at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on Lyons View Pike. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 11:30 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2008.
