I have traced my Bermudez lineage back to the time Utuado was founded in the 1700's. According to my research Germán Bermúdez was one of the first settlers in the area that would later be called Caguana. Parrish records place him in Caguana in 1749. He had 10 known children (according to the historian Fernando Picó in his book, Libertad y Servidumbre en el Puerto Rico del Siglo XIX: Los Jornaleros Utuadeños en Vispera del Auge del Café). I have documented 7 of them: Ambrosio, Clara, Diamana, German, Maria, Juan and Francisca. My branch of the tree comes from Ambrosio, as follows: Ambrosio Bermúdez Santiago (b. abt 1765) married Eugenia Rosario Mendez. They had: Pablo (b. 20 Jun 1793). I also know of 2 other children they had: Julian and Vicente. Pablo Bermúdez Rosario married Maria Dolores de Jesus and they had: Maria, Carmen, Juan Ramon, Martina, Antonia, Carmen, Juan Antonio, Pedro and Rafael. Juan Ramon Bermudez de Jesus (b. abt 1830) married (m. 11 Jun 1855) Maria del Carmen Cortéz Bermúdez. They had: Amador, Francisco, Maria Mercedes, Ramona, Rosa and Antonio. Amador Bermúdez Cortéz (b. abt 1866) married Margarita Ruiz Cortéz and had: Antonio, Juana, Ramon Amador, Jose Bartolome, Gole, Mila and Romon Dolores. Margarita died shortly after giving birth to Jose Bartolome in 1894. A year later Amador had a child (my grandfather) with Ignacia Ruiz Cortéz, Margarita's sister: Hilario Bermudez Ruiz. Hilario had 17 children with Juana Maria Lugo Capetillo: Isaias, Gilberto, Emeterio (my father), Margarita, Amador, Erminia, Mariana, Esther (died as a child), Samuel, Isabel, Elena, Maria Estrella, Moises, Nehemias, Esther, Amada and Elias. My father Emeterio married Norma Iris Mercado Bermúdez (my maternal grandmother was the daughter of Ramon Amador, so that makes my parents 2nd 1/2 cousins) in 1951. I am the youngest of 11 children they had. Back to German: I have documenation that states he is "natural de Arecibo" and another stating he is "natural de San Germán." Fernando Picó says he may be from Coamo. I'd like to make a connection with anyone that has or is doing research on the Bermudez' of Utuado. I want to trace our family back to Spain. I have a hunch Germån's father or grandfather came with the contingent of Canary Islander's that migrated to the island in the mid to late 1600's and early 1700's. I also know that there were 2 brothers, Juan and Diego Bermúdez that were part of Columbus' crew when he discovered PR and Santo Domingo. The little research I have found on these 2 brothers indicates they might have settled in Santo Domingo and/or Cuba. Oral history passed down the generations says our Bermudez Family came from 2 brothers that migrated to PR from Santo Domingo. If that is the case our lineage could be linked to Juan and Diego. If you have any information to add or would like to know more, give me a shout. all the best, Joel Bermúdez Mercado Notify Administrator about this message?
