Hello,
I am glad to hear of someone acknowledging that the Sweetings possibly came from Bermuda.
Over the past year I have gathered a few Bahamian history books and read various people's accounts on different websites. Only recently have I started researching the Sweeting's origin here in the New World. As I have only scratched the surface, so far these are some possibilities of the earliest arrivals:
1) 1612-Bermuda was first colonized about 1612 with about 60 settlers from England. Has anyone out there ever come across this list of settlers?
2) 1635-Documented is the arrival of one Joseph Sweeting that came to Barbados in 1635 from England (and later a Samuel Sweeting in 1685). Today I know of a Sweeting from Barbados but I don't know if his line dates way back through Barbados or maybe he is just recently from there. I hope to talk with him soon. Could our Bahamian Sweetings have originated from Barbados?
3) 1647-The Eleutheran Adventures that left Bermuda for the Bahamas in 1647 included about 70 people, perhaps more. The general consensus is that Sweetings were not amongst that group, but has anyone ever seen a complete list of those names if it even exists?
4) 1783-Some think that Sweetings were Loyalists seeking refuge in the Bahamas soon after the American Revolutionary War 1776. But documented Bahamian census's from the 1720s and 1740s show Sweetings as inhabitants.
One thing is for sure, Sweetings loved the "B" islands!
