The de Berminghams came to Ireland from England in 1170 as part of Richard Strongbow's conquest. Through the years the family adopted Irish customs like the other Anglo-Normans. One part of the family, the descendents of Pierce de Bermingham, adopted the Irish name MacPheorais (or MacFeoris)meaning son of Pierce, evidentally in the 1400s as they identified more and more with the native Irish.
