Chicago City Directories and 1910 U.S. Federal Census

In Reply to: Carl Fredrik Leonhard Bergström born 1862 Malmö, Caroli Sogn, Sweden by Therese Bergström of 319

I have a Bergstrom of my own (Christian Erik Bergström, to be exact) who was born in Maribo sogn and amt in Denmark (29 February 1860) and his Danish roots go back to at least 1801 or so and probably earlier.

At any rate, Christian Erik Bergstrom lived in Chicago and I have some printouts of Chicago City Directories for some years. I see your relative listed on those printouts. (The directories have very small print on the microfilms I saw and also were blurry and in some cases, almost impossible to read.)

I don't see your Carl in 1898 or 1900 or 1901 or 1902.

I don't see him in 1907.

1909

Bergstrom Carl tailor h (home) 719 Herndon (his address)

1910

Bergstrom Carl tailor 3216 Herndon (his address; Chicago streets were renumbered in 1909 so perhaps he didn't move but the number was just changed.)

1911

Bergstrom Carl tailor 3216 Herndon

1912

Bergstrom Carl F.L. tailor h (home) 3216 Herndon

1913

Bergstrom Carl F.L. tailor h (home) 3216 Herndon

I don't see him in 1916 or 1917 or 1923.

Those are the only printouts I have which might show your Bergstrom. Post on a board for Illinois (and then look for a board for Cook County on the same page since Chicago is in Cook County) to see if someone can check some other directories which I didn't copy. (It would narrow down the time period he was in Chicago.)

1910 U.S. Federal Census

1910 United States Federal Census

Carl F.L. Bergstrom lived at 3216 Herndon Street. (I might have misread the address in those blurry directory printouts.) This was Carl's second marriage and he had been married 6 years. His wife was in her first marriage. He immigrated in 1902 and was in the process of getting his citizenship but was not yet a citizen. He had taken out his "first papers". He was born in Sweden and so were his parents. He was a tailor. He spoke English. He was paid a wage. He was able to read and write.
