Do you know where in Sweden John was born? My relatives come from Nordingrå, Ångermanland, Västernorrlands län. My grandfather had an uncle Johan who was born around the same time as your relative My John/Johan came to the U.S. early enough to fight in the Civil War. His wife was Emma also. Supposedly he changed his name to John Thompson and ended up in southern California.
Maybe there could be a connection. Name changes have a way of mixing the broth.
There were allegedly no children by John & Emma, but my experience shows this would have been very unusual.
