This is such a long shot that I'm almost embarrassed to be responding.

I have a Gustave Bergmann who married my GG Aunt Clara B. Thompson in Peoria IL in 1903. I have no birth date for Gus, but Clara was born in 1879.

My Gus, according to family myth, was said to have had a thick German accent. When WWI broke out, he was asked for whom he would fight, if called. He supposedly replied, without hesitation, "For the Fatherland."
