Hi Eva,

Thanks for your note.
I have family living around Bern, including a Peter Berger (third cousin - our great granfathers were brothers).
My family originally came from Eiken, then my great grandfather and a brother migrated here (Australia). I know the name is VERY popular, in German and French areas.
Our family goes back to the 1300's in Eiken, as they did not move around much.
Your details about families not being able to afford much were the same for our family. After the Swiss "civil" war, and with the lack of trees for timber and growing families it was hard.
If you would like any of the Berger details I can send you some information in text or gedcom files. I also have a coat of arms for our Bergers, but it may be just the Eiken branch.

Anyway, thanks again for your note.
Please keep in touch,

Yours faithfully,
Peter Berger
