Dear James,

Maureen O'Neill has already answered you. We believe we are related through County Antrim family.

I believe my Illinois Beresfords were helped here by relatives in Jefferson Co., Ohio where Boyds, Moores and Hannas also settled (see the book of the Beresfords for them). Robert and John Beresford bought land in Henderson Co., IL in 1852 within 3 days of each other. I think they were our Jeff Co. cousins buying land for us. My gggrandfather John first appears in the 1860 Henderson Co. census with wife Margaret and 2 sons, one James, father of my gmother Ollie Beresford Worden. The Hendersons who settled the county originally came from County Antrim too, via northern New Jersey that had a Scottish colony (Perth Amboy, Monmouth Co.) that attracted Ulstermen. My Wordens are from NJ.

Per the local Oquawka Spectator of the 1850s, immigrants from County Antrim, including our Gibb relatives, landed at the Mississippi R. dock, coming straight from Belfast, or possibly Liverpool. So Henderson/Warren Counties have a large Anglo-Scots-Irish population from NI and areas all over the East (PA, OH, MD, VA, KY, NC). They include Boyds, too I think.

Do you know anything about your N. Ireland origins?

Kay Larson
