Ida Rosen (?) Sterkin (1882-1960) Ohio Puzzle
Dear Rosen/Berendt Genealogists,
I am doing research on behalf of a cousin who is interested
in her paternal grand and greatgrandparents. Her family name Sterkin. We have come across a genealogical puzzle
that you may be able to solve. The bottom line question is:
Did Rudolf Rosen or Dorothea Berendt/Rosen have another daughter or relative also named Ida? Below are that facts that have lead us to you folks:
1. An Ida (1882-1960) married a Joseph Sterkin (1883-
1947). They had 10 children one of whom was Sam Sterkin
(1910 [Cleveland, OH]-1989); my cousin's father. These dates are confirmed by CA and SSDI records.
2. This Ida's maiden name was Rosen according to her
son Sam's CA death record. Her own and her husband's do
not show this information and my cousin can not confirm
this with any first hand knowledge. Here we will see if
we can locate any of her aunts or uncles who may know.
3. According to my cousin one of the daughters was named
Dorothy after Ida's mother. The other children's names that my cousin could remember are: Albert, Morris, Benjamin, Celia, David, Manet, and Fay.
4. Most if not all these Sterkins subsequently moved out to
California.
5. In 9/1892 according to the Ellis Island database an Ida
Rosen, age 10, arrived with a Rudolf,57, and Dorothea Rosen, 42, and 3 other children: Emma,11; Anna,2, and
Franz,9 mo. If Ida's age here is correct that would place
her birth year as 1882 which jives with my cousin's grandmother's year of birth. On the other had your record
list "only" an Ida Berendt Schumacher/Smith/Pretzer (1879
-1957). From the information on your site I must
assume that at least everyone except this Ida is one of your ancestors although Emma's age does not jive with the year of birth you have; 1879. This date though seems
out of wack with the date of 1/2 sister's Ida Berendt's
year of birth as 1878. Knowing when the Berendts came to the States might clear up some of the mystery.
I hope this is has not become too convoluted and that
some aspect of this puzzle will be of interest to you.
Our original question stems from this information. There's
the matter that the Sterkins are also from Ohio which is
too much of a coincidence. Perhaps Ida Rosen Sterkin is
another daughter or relative of Rudolf's who came with
them from Europe and then joined her own family in another
part of Ohio.
We would appreciate any enlightenment in this regards or
any information about links to the Sterkins.
Many thanks for your kind attentions.
Sincerely, Oren Kaplan
