I found this mention of Jean Baptiste Berard being a merchant in St. Louis in the book, titled, The Founding of New Acadia, by Carl Brasseaux, and it says,
Jean Berard, a former merchant of St. Louis whose wife was Ann Broussard, led a group of newly arrived Acadians, who were greatly upset about their domesitcated cattle being slaughtered as wild cattle, together they slaughtered a significant number of the offending livestock that was owned by the wealthy Flammand, the Grevemberg, brothers, and this led to the Flammand brothers demanding that the Commandment Alexander DeClouet of the Post of ATtakapas imprison the ringleaders. Also, Jean Berard was assisted in this led by Claude Boutte, who was a Frenchman, and who had also lost some cattle to the slaughter.
