Hi, I'm from Puerto Rico and my great-grandfather was from Germany. I have also done some research about this last name and in fact it exist since the last century. The last name Bentz appear before BENZ (at least in Germany). The last name Bentz comes from the last name Bentzel. What happen with your family's last name was unique. I found all this information with a company that investigate the history of European Geneology.
