James Benton in N.C.
My ancestor is James Benton who was born in 1743 in Johnston Co., N.C., who received a land patent in 1773 in Anson Co., N.C., and who applied for a Revolutionary War pension there in 1834. For YEARS now, I have tried to PROVE who his parents were. Despite several published genealogical works which try to establish a connection between James and Samuel Benton (and, subsequently, Thomas Hart Benton), I find no proof nor even strong circumstantial evidence. It appears to me, in reviewing my notes, that James could just as well belong to any one of several N.C. Benton families which include children named "James" (such as those in Gates and Edgecombe counties). Can anyone shed light on this?
