Helen,
Thanks for the notes. A lot to digest and I will take a while to digest it all.I agree that this looks like our common family. You have perhaps solved the problem for me about which brother committed suicide, as you know what killed John. It looks as if John's sibling, Ebenezer, born 1820 is the culprit.Any chance you might find out about this death (suicide)? A bit difficult to do it from over here. It must have taken place sometime between his arrival in America in 1847 and the return to the UK of his widow, Susannah nee Lambert, by 1851. She remarried to aRudd Pummell 1856 back in Birmingham. Ebenezer reputedly went to New York (state? or city?).
The confusion over first name of John's wife - Rebecca/Mary Green/e is understandable as that note was written by someone over here much later than 1864. I wonder if places of arrival were also mixed up?
I have John arriving New Orleans then Philadelphia
and Ebenezer arriving New York.Could have been confused?
Meantime a few notes about Johns family -
FatherSamuel Benton 1782 - 1836 hanged himself
Mother Mary Williams(on?) 1780 - 1850
John Benton 1810 - 1853
SIBLINGS
Ebenezer Benton 1820 - (1847-1851
Thomas Benton - (my 2 X G Grandfather) 1816 - 1865
Rebecca Benton 1818 - 1889
Sarah Benton 1803 - 1839
James (Williams) Benton 1811 - 1854 Cut his own throat
Lucy Benton 1801 - ?
Ann(e) Benton 1804 - 1853
Samuel Benton 1808 - 1812 (?)
Samuel Benton 1815 - 1879
Mary Ann Benton 1813 - (?)
I am currently struggling with the previous generation. Family legend has it that they came to Birmingham from Tamworth, but I cannot find a connection other than Mary Williams(on) being bapt Kingsbury nr Tamworth Oct 1784. Possibly this maternal line is the connection.
John's father, Samuel, appears to have been the son of Samuel Benton (1748 - about 1815) of TaNworth, Warwickshire OR -
the son of Samuel Benton and Gertrude Stilliard of Birmingham
I am puzzling over this currently.
If you want to know any details about the above names try me at - [email protected]
Thanks
