UPDATE March 2003: Benton DNA Project
Dear Cousins,
Now that spring is here, it is a good time to report the latest information on the Benton DNA Project. Results from a few new participants are now available, and below is a full report of those ancestral lines who match and those who don't.
DNA test results prove all of the following BENTON lines descend from a common ancestor:
- Thomas Benton of TN b.1801, m. Lucy ARNOLD
- Francis Marion Benton b.1795 Edgefield Co. SC
- John Benton b.1791 Edgefield Co. SC
- Wm Wilson Benton b.1839 GA, s/o John Washington Benton, NC/SC > GA
- Mark Benton Sr. b.1780 SC, d. bef 1856 Barry Co. MO
- Job Benton b.1744 NC, m. Hannah LINCH; lived in Brunswick Co. NC
- Asbury Green Benton b. c1830 (m. Morgan Co. AL) via son James Wesley Benton b. c1853 Morgan Co. AL
- James A. Benton b.1856
- Francis Wren/Ren Benton b.c1836 MO
- John Benton b.1789 Colleton Co. SC
- Jesse Benton b.c1860 MO
- James Wesley Benton b.c1858 FL > Asberry G. b.1889 TX
The following 4 lines match, thus they descend from a common ancestor::
- Epaphroditus BENTON b.c1760 NC, d. 1829 Robertson Co. TN
- Richard BENTON b. c1766 NC > Estill Co. KY
- James BENTON b.1813 TN, m. Nancy MORRIS
- William D. Benton b.c1805 GS or GA, d. c1832 Copiah Co. MS
The following lines are participating in the Benton DNA Study but have not matched another Benton line yet:
- Jesse Benton b.c1743 NC, m. Nancy GOOCH
- John Benton b.1821, of Meigs/McMinn Co. TN
- Jesse Benton m. 1809 Knox Co. TN Betsey STOUT > son Peter Stout BENTON
- Edward Benton b.1600 Essex England d. 1680 Guilford CT
- John Benton b. c1800 NC m. Martha RODGERS > Francis Marion Benton b.1841
- Daniel Benton b.1811 MA
While you are working on your lines, please keep an eye out for a *male Benton* descendant of these lines:
1. Samuel BENTON, father of Jesse Benton, father of Sen. Thomas Hart Benton
2. David Benton - b. NC, moved to Warren Co. TN where he d.1819/20
3. Joseph Benton 1725-1807, Will proved March 1807 in Montgomery Co. Maryland; proven father of Mordecai BENTON b.1762 who removed to Jackson Co. GA where he died intestate in 1811.
4.Francis Benton of Kent Island in Queen Anne's Co. MD, will proven May 1718 naming wife Mary, son Thomas and "youngest son" Benjamin Benton.
If you are interested in joining our DNA study, please contact me directly for additional information:[email protected] have obtained a special group rate from FamilyTreeDNA, the Lab we use for our testing, which is lot less expensive than a research trip, believe me! No vital body parts are required - just a simple swab of the inside of the cheek; there is no discomfort at all. Results are available in about 45-60 days. If you descend from any of the above Benton lines, or think you might or wish you did, participating in this DNA project could help your research considerably and provide some much needed proof and direction for further research.
Congratulations to all who have a DNA match, and may 2003 be THE year we all find the missing piece of information we need to blast through our brick walls.
Happy rooting,
Sharron Spencer
