Dr. Robert Julian Bentley, a Tuscaloosa, AL dematologist, recently announced his candidacy for Governor of AL. He has presently been in the Alabama Legislature for about five years. Dr. Bentley is a native of Columbiana, AL and apparently a descendant of Eli Amos Bentley who came into Shelby County, AL in the 1850's and married Sarah E. Horton there on October 2, 1858. E. A. Bentley was listed as 28 year old and born in GA in the 1860 census of Shelby County. He appears to have been the Eli Bentley, age 18, who was in the census of Tallapoosa Co., AL in 1850. In the 1880 census, E. A. Bentley states that he was born in GA and that both his parents were born in GA. Eli "E. A."
is buried with his wife in the Union UMC Cemetery near Columbiana, AL. The cemetery census posted his birth date as March 16, 1823. However, it would appear from census records that the year of his birth should have been 1832.
Does anyone have information on the parents of Eli Amos Bentley (1832-1913)?
