I believe you have the Mary Bentleys mixed up.Mary Goodwin Bentley, wife of William, was the mother of Margaret Bentley (some places referred to as Mary).Mary Goodwin Bentley was buried July 1, 1632 in Elstow and her will was dated June 27, 1632.Her will named daughters Margaret and Mary (the executrix).Margaret Bentley married Thomas Bunyan, was the mother of the writer of Pilgrim's Progress John Bunyan, and died June 10, 1644 in Elstow. This all according the Cameron Stewart and the rcords clerk at Bedfordshire.
Mary signed the will with an X and likely was illiterate.John Bunyan was not well educated but rather taught himself thru reading books, according to various biographies.
Am working on Bentley history from William Bentley and Mary Goodwin of Ampthill-Elstow thru John-William of Rhode Island-William--Green and Green of New York-George C and George E of South Dansville, NY.Will gladly share info.Have over 150 pages thus far.
