Hi Kathy,
I was aware that Caleb Bentley served in the Colonial Army before the Revolution, but this is a little more specific. Perhaps you already have this - I discovered this while researching Caleb's sister, Ruth, who married Gideon Satterlee.
"Gideon Satterlee appears on the roll of the Rhode Island Company as a corporal in the expedition against Havana in 1762 under Admiral Pocock and Lord Albermaris, also under Capt. Russell. 'Corpril Calib Bentley' (brother to Ruth, wife of Gideon) was in the same company." - Rhode Island Volunteers, Vol. 14, p. 56
According to the pension office, Caleb Bentley was appointed Captain in the Albany County, NY Militia February 20, 1775. That's pretty early in the Revolution - and I suppose his appointment to the advanced rank of Captain reflects his previous war experience.
My Encylopaedia Britannica says that the Battle of Havana in 1762 was part of the war between England and Spain. The British and (colonial forces) captured Havana - exchanging it 11 months later for the Spainish posessions in Florida.
Who would imagine that Caleb Bentley had anything to do with the the US acquisition of Florida?
Best regards,
Jim
