Here are the tax lists from Amelia Co., in which I have inserted with Bentleys (no surname) the Hammocks, Northerns and the one and only Younger.
You will see in the last 20 minutes I come up with the idea that maybe John with wife Christian was married twice. We know he is in Nottoway Parish from the tax lists.Maybe by first wife he had Samuel (S) Bentley.
Bentleys in Amelia County Tax records from:
· Amelia County, Virginia, Tax Lists, 1736-1764: An Every-name Index. (1993), 217 pages, map, soundex index. $15.00. by TLC Genealogy.
The surname is Bentley unless other wise noted:
1737 – Samuel 37w (note Spicer on tax lists this year only)
1738 – Samuel 38w
1739 – Samuel 39a
1740 – John 40a; Samuel 40a
1741 – John 41f; Samuel 41f
1742 – John 42f; Samuel 42f
Benedick Hammock Shows Up, with John in Nottoway
1744 – John 44h,Bently 44f (no first name), Benedick Hammond 44h
1746 – John 46f,46h (Nottoway); Samuel 46f, Benedick Hammock 46h
1747 – John 47a; Samuel 47a, Benedick and William Hammock 47h
1748 – John 48h; Samuel 48c and 48a; Benadick & William HAMMOCK, 48(h)
1749 – John 49a and 49c; Samuel 49aand 49c; “Mr.” Bently 49j, Benadick& William Hammock 49c
One John in 1750– John with Mary Ellis (on same list as Samuel) to Halifax with son Edmund??Until 1756 when John, son of Samuel w1784 shows up, only one John in Nottoway?James Spicer and Ann, show up with likely son of Ann William in Brunswick.I think maybe brother John also stayed for a while with the Spicers in Richmond Co., that he married Christian thereabouts. Maybe it is he that shows up with the Hammocks 1744, tax list h in Nottoway.Another scenario:maybe he (not John with wife Mary Ellis) was married twice. First to unknown person in Richmond, by whom he had a son Samuel (Samuel (S) Bentley).Wife #1 passes away.John marries #2 Christian who wants to move on with the Hammocks, but older son Samuel (S) Bentley stays put in Nottoway.
1750 – John 50c; Samuel 50c; Benadick & William Hammock 50c; John Northen 50cWhere are the a, f lists?
1751—John 51c and 51e; Samuel 51f;(no Hammocks); John Northen 51c; Jno Northon 51g; NOTHRENJohn 51e
1752 – John 52c; Samuel 52a, 52c and 52f (no Hammocks)
1753 – John 53c; Samuel 53f and 53c; Benadick, Benadick Jr. & Wm Hammock 53c; John, Edwd
Northern 53c
1754 – John 54c; Samuel 54c and 54f; Benadick, Benadick Jr. & Wm Hammock 54c;Edmund Northern 54j
1755 – John 55c and 55f (2); Samuel 55c, 55d and 55f, Samuel tithes 55j; BenJr., Benadick Hammuck 55c

1757 – Samuel 57b(partial)
1761 – John 61b; Samuel 61b (2); Benidick & William Hammock 61b
About time John & Christian go to Onslow Co and a Samuel (given signatures, maybe son of Samuel w1784) shows up in Halifax Co.The Northerns are gone too now.And we are down to one Samuel and one John in 1763 and 1764.We need the later lists to see how long this “one Samuel, one John” holds up.I think Marsha is getting them?
1762 – John 62mc (2); Samuel 62mc and 62f; Benadick Jr.,John,William. 62mc
1763 – John 63j; Samuel 63k; Benedick Hammock,Benedict Jr., John, William Hammock, 63c

A warning:"...the location of a tax precinct was often different when the order book entry was compared with the header (the label at the top of the tax list, written in the same handwriting as the rest of the tax list); in that case, the header on the tax list was used.... There are several reasons why some Amelia residents may be missing from some tax lists. Firstly, some lists were so faded or mutilated, that some names could not be read. Such lists are noted in the code list, below. Secondly, a few tax lists (such as those taken by Thomas Tabb) contain only the heads of household, rather than naming every taxable person ... Finally .. a fair number of early Amelia tax lists that are undated (rather than missing) and those lists are not included in this volume."
In the Book there's a section explaining some of the tax list codes.
