Hi Allan,
Recall that James Spicer's 1767 will's mini-abstract in the Academy Report also has a bequest to John, son of William, who I think is probably the forgotten brother of Samuel and John.Could this John gone to Pitt Co be William's son?Regarding marriage records, unless there were ministers returns somewhere, they would have been in the parish registers I imagine. For both Nottoway and Raleighparishes (Amelia Co), those registers for this period haven't survived. So, it certainly isn't surprising we can't find them!(They should have stayed in North Farnham Prish, Richmond Co!
This isn't directly related to the above, but regards my questioning whether or not John Bentley who married Christian Hammock, had not first been married to Mary Ellis. I found the following deed in Halifax Co. from Edward Bentley to John and Mary his wife in 19 Mar 1767, after the deed from Benedict Hammond.Don't know if they are the same as the ones involved the court case in Amelia in 1766.HOWEVER, the following deed sounds like one that would be given to a son, nephew, favored family member don't you think?Any ideas?
"Chiarto p.29619 Mar 1767.Edward Bentley of Halifax Co. to John Bentley & Mary his wife & their heirs, of same, during their natural life, yielding & paying one ear of Indian corn per annum on the Feast of St. Michael the Arch Angel, if demanded, 100 acs, part of a tract whereon sd John & Mary now live, beg. at William Carley's back line on the lower side of the Cowford Road....Richard Echols line...Mill Cr....toward Bannister....Carley's line...All gardens, orchards./s/ Edward X BentleyNo wit.Rcd 19 Mar 1767"
