Hi Marsha,
You said :"It may be possible that John and Christian married after he had been married to Mary, but it is also possible that the John and Mary which appear in court records may have been John b. abt 1710's son-John. THis is the one that was supposedly constable in Halifax county in 1760."This could be true, though I would tend toward the proposition that they were John and Mary (Ellis) Bentley, married 1727 in Christ Church Parish.
I don't know much at all about any of the grandsons of Daniel and Anne Bentley, except for Samuel's sons John, William Weldon, and Efford Bentley.
I am not even sure for example what happened to Samuel, d. bef 1795's son Samuel Jr., nor whether John Bentley the brother had a son Samuel as you seem to indicate -- regardless of who the wife is.I have not studied the documents closely enough, and would like to see some records (beyond statements in the Academy Report) for the various sons. It sounds as though you have collected alot more census information, etc. than I have. Figuring out Samuel, d. bef 1795's son Samuel, has been on the backburner for a long time.
