Hi Allen,
thank you for the information!I have the following on Stephen in addition to what I posted earlier.
Dorchester county tax list 1678
Baltimore county tax list, 1700
Baltimore ""1701
Baltimore ""1702
Baltimore ""1704
I've just recently started tracing my family (originally from Floyd co. Ky, and made the mistake of not listing my source for the Montgomery co. entries.
As for Richard, the references I've found have been the following from the Maryland webgen home page:
Dorchester County is one of the original counties of Maryland, formed before April 13,1669.Before its formation, the area was already surveyed and home to early settlers such as Anthony LeCompte, William Chaplin, Richard Bentley, Thomas Stone, Thomas Stillington, John and Stephen Gary, Francis Armstrong, Peter Sharpe, John Felton, William Stevens, Thomas Powell, John Hudson, and others.Nearly 500 settlers lived in the area by the time of the county's formation. The area was also home to Nanticoke and Abacos indians----
and from Dorchester A to Z found this paragraph:
Richard Bentley received the first patent of land in Dorchester county on June 30th, 1659.He called his land Michael Bentley, located on the Honga (hunger) river of Hoopersville. He received another grant of 300 acres called Bentley on the northwest side of Bentley's Point.
He showed up in the court records of Maryland quite a bit. Some examples are:John Whiston demanded a writ agt Richard Bentley in an action 8 Dec. 1660 of debt of five hundred and eight pounds of tobacco, 2) Richard Bentley dec. 1660 demanded a writ agt Samuell Graues to appeare the 11th of Dec. to answere in an action of debt-- several others for 1661.Haven't gone through the others yet to see what years the court actions ended.
I also have court actions for January 1661 where a Henry Bentley was a test (testator?) not quite sure what that means.A Nathan Bentley was transported to Dorchester county in 1673, was part of a jury in Charles Co. court proceedings in 1671, part of another jury in 1672, testified in a court proceeding same period, his age was given as 30 years or thereabouts.
So, I have a Richard, Henry, Nathan, and Stephen in the same time frame.Starting to wonder if the "four brothers" rumor might not be true.
Also have a supplement to early settlers, that says a John Bentley was transported in 1659, service by 1663.Richard bentley, immigrated by 1658, Samuell Bentley transported in 1654, service by 1663, and Thomas Bentley, transported by 1681.It doesn't say where they were transported to, still looking into that.
thanks,
Teresa
