Dear Mr. Stewart,
Thank you for your letter of 12th February, 1978. Wm. Bentley was baptised in Ampthill church on 13 Sep. 1640.He was the son of Jn. Bentley who married Mary Betts, also in Ampthill church on 3 Oct. 1630. Five other children of John and Mary are recorded as being baptised at Ampthill before their brother William. i.e. Robt.25 Mar. 1631; Mary 11 Nov. 1632; John 20 Jul. 1634; Thos. 10 Apr. 1636; and Jas.6 May 1638. Jn Bentley, the father, was buried at
Ampthill (1) on 26 Mar. 1666, and Thos on Jan. 11 following; Jn. on 22 July. 1686 and Jas. on 28 Jan. 1696/7.The registers contain further information.
Jn. Bentley above (who married Mary Betts) was the son of William Bentley who married Mary Goodwin in St. Paul's church, Bedford on the 18 or 20 May 1601 (parish register and transcript do not agree on the day). This couple had six children baptised in Elstow church- Margt. on 13 Nov 1603; Eliz 23 Oct. 1605; Thos. 12 Jul. 1607; Jn. 5 Nov. 1608; Rose 12 Jul. 1612; Emma on 8 Feb. 1617.Margt married Thomas Bunnion, jun. (himself baptised at Elstow on 24 Feb. 1602) on 23 May 1627 (she being his second wife).Their eldest son, John (baptised on 30 Nov. 1628), was the author of "THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS".Their daughter, Rose (baptised 1612), married Edward Bonnionn, born before 1602, brother of Thos. and Uncle of John the writer.
WE think James Bentley was born in Virginia due to the 1880 census record of David Bentley and Elias Bentley showing birth place of thier father (James) as Virginia.
It is my belief that James descends from Sally Bentley who migrated to Union County, South Carolina, but more proof is necessary before we can say for sure.Sally is the daughter of Samuel Bentley, Sr.of Richmond County, Virginia.Samuel was Christened at north Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia in 1719.
I descend from William Bentley I, who came from England on the ship Jacob and setled in Elizabeth City county, Virginia in 1624.some of his children migrated to North and South Carolina and from there to Tennesse, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas.
I hope this helps you understand a little better.I reemmber when I first strated working on family history many years ago how confusing it was.
I hope you are doing well,
Happy hunting!
Allan L. Bentley of Georgia
