Hi Pam,
My John Bentley's parents are Mark Bentley and Mary Doxey (tho' John married a second time to a Harriet Hambleton who we found on the 1871 census as Harriet Bentley living in Lydgate Saddleworth).
Connections I have so far starting with my father as follows:
Vernon BENTLEY, b. 1902 Oldham.
Parents John James BENTLEY (b. 1867 Mossley) and Susannah Cowap WOOD(b. 1870 Miles Platting).
John James' father was John BENTLEY (b.1845ish Bollington/Titherington, Macclesfield) and Ann Brook(s) (b. 1845ish Meltham Yorks).
John's parents Mark Massey BENTLEY (b. 1817ish Ipstone Staffs and Mary Doxey 1817 Worksworth Derbs.) (John married a second time to Harriet HAMBLETON in 1855)
Mark's parents were Mark BENTLEY (BENTALEY)and Ellen MASSEY - we have their marriage certificate but no other details so far.
Other BENTLEYS I have in that area so far are Mark BENTLEY who was my grandfather's brother and who died in a carting accident in Stalybridge in 1880.
His (and John's) sister Sarah married Tom 'Squire' Kershaw who kept the Wagon Inn in the High Street Uppermill Saddleworth in the 1881 census (later kept the Navigation).
Would be fascinated to know if you have any connections anywhere.
Good hunting!Pat
