Hi Sara, My Grandfather's Grandfather(My Great Great Grandfather) was also a chimney sweep. My Grandad tells me that The Benthams were originally sweeps so I think there must have been some kind of family business. My Grandad was told stories about his Grandfather (I think his name was either William or George) and his pony and cart. He would go out and get so drunk that he could hardly stand. Someone would always put him on the back of his cart and the pony would then take him home. Another story is about how he only had one bath a week and had to sleep on the sofa as his wife wouldn't let him in bed while covered head to toe in soot. Anyway he was shot and killed in Egypt in the first World War. My Grandfather remembers going to an Uncle and Aunt's house in Leicester when he was very young. He says the name Charlotte sounds very familiar and believes it was she who he went to stay with. He had two sisters (Jean and Joyce) Jean died in the seventies. Joyce still lives in Oakham, she never married or had any children. Jean was married and had either 4 or 5 children. I'm not sure what her married surname was, I'll find out. My Great Grandfather John Henry Bentham (aka Harry) was born in 1906 and died I think in 1975. I have a few pictures of him that were taken in 1972, you never know he might resemble someone on your side. I remember going to Oakham when I was young. I can remember meeting My great grandfather although I was young at the time. I think the lived on New Street. My Grandad says it's where the big supermarket now is. we have many pictures and cuttings from newspapers. I'll start scanning them next week and I'll send you what I have. My Grandfather is now 77 and hasn't been to Oakham since 1987. I think I'll be taking him later in the Summer. I find it very interesting hearing about all the stories he has. My Grandad has been up here (Scotland) since the late Forties. He was married to my Gran in 1947 and had my Mother (an only child) in 1950. We all still live here in a place called Lanark. There seems to be loads of Bentham's in Lancashire, I don't think they are related though. Do you still live in Oakham? Do you have any brothers or sisters? If you have any Questions you think my Grandad or I can answer then let me know. Hope To Hear From You Soon. Craig. PS. I'm not going to be in the office to pick up my e-mails over the Easter weekend so if you send e-mails to craigbentham@hotmail.com that would be great. Notify Administrator about this message?
