Researching ggrandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Benson, b 28 May 1843 to Samuel & Elmira Benson, Athens, Somerset Co., ME. Mother was Elmira Smith, b 1806 in Cornville, d 11 Jul 1893. Elmira's death certificate shows DOW as HER mother's maiden name.
We believe Sarah to have a sister, Anna, b 1835. However, Anna's (m (1) Stevens, (2) Thompson) death certificate lists Harrison Benson as father, Elmira Smith, mother. My own feeling is the informant was incorrect-- Harrison was one of her brothers, not her father.
There was a William H. (perhaps Harrison) Benson, a farmer, b apx 1840 from Athens enlisted into Co. F, 7th Regiment Maine Vol. on 17 Dec 1862 listed wounded on 20 Sep 1863 near Sharpsburg, MD.
We have found various records of purchases/sales of property listing Samuel Benson as a houseright/joiner--one dated 5 Mar 1829 showing his wife to be Huldah.
A Samuel Benson has been found in Athens 1830 census, age btw 40-50 with one male btw 15-20, one btw 20-30; wife btw 30-40 with females btw 5-10, 10-15, 15-20. We have found a Huldah Cushman b 26 Apr 1793, Hebron, Oxford Co., ME m Samuel Benson 21 Jan 1821 and children Mary, b Nov 1821, Augusta C. b 1826; Florilla Jane b 1831. This leads us to believe Samuel and Huldah were probably the parents of another son, Samuel, who was our Sarah Elizabeth's father. We have found Augusta Benson in Cornville, Somerset Co. and Huldah Benson in Paris, Osford Co. in the 1850 ME census. Also Athens 1850 census shows Elmira Benson now married to Hubbard Stevens with Anna, age 14 and Sarah, age 7. No Samuel dead or alive. Does anyone have a more positive record? Your help will certainly be appreciated.
